A CD of Portland Cello Project plays Beck Hansen's Song Reader!

Announcing Portland Cello Project’s release of their recordings of all twenty songs (yes, 20!) from Beck’s sheet-music-only Song Reader (published by McSweeney's). (Yes, he released sheet music only, at first! And we were the first group to record all 20 of them!)

Recorded the same week that the Song Reader was released to the public, with numerous special guests, in three different studios across Portland, this album showcases Beck’s monumental, refined songwriting achievement. The album flows with the diversity of an Oregon weather report... whether you like or don’t like what’s happening at one moment, don’t get too attached, because it has nothing to do stylistically with what will be happening a moment later.

Portland Cello Project and their collaborators were amazed by how many epiphanies appeared as they learned and recorded the songs. Here is not a satire of the Song Readers of the past, though the humor is not to be missed. Here is not just a beautifully produced livre d’artiste from McSweeney’s, though the beauty of the presentation is not to be missed. Here is, at its core, a collection of well-written, highly refined songs, one that seems to have allowed Beck to expand upon the beauty and insight of his words more than ever before.

The Song Reader is a fearless collection of songs.

Special guests performing on the record include Jolie Holland, Lizzy Ellison and Patti King (Radiation City), Adam Shearer, Chanticleer Tru, Nate Query (Decemberists), Daniel Hunt (AgesAndAges), Damon Boucher, Matt Berger (Laura Gibson Band), Sam Howard, Brian Wright (Grand Hallway, Gold Leaves), and Dave Depper (literally every band in Portland).
